IARU INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONGRESS “CLIMATE CHANGE: GLOBAL RISKS, CHALLENGES AND DECISIONS”, MAR 10-12, 2009, COPENHAGEN.
The Danish Government as host of the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP15) to be held in Copenhagen at the end of 2009 supports this Congress organised by IARU as part of the run-up to the COP 15. The purpose of the congress is to try and capture some of the enormous research energy currently being devoted to the elucidation, mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Thus, the focus of the congress is on providing a picture of the “big issues” that the scientific community feels it is necessary that policy makers are aware of in order to make enlightened decisions with respect to the balancing of adaptation and mitigation in the societal response to climate change. All findings will be handed over to policy makers at the COP15 in Copenhagen at the end of 2009. Dr Jo Williams will be one of the speakers talking about the “zero carbon homes” project at this conference.

9TH NORDIC ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE (NESS) - KNOWLEDGE, LEARNING AND ACTION FOR SUSTAINABILITY, LONDON, UK, 10TH - 12TH JUNE 2009 - WORKING GROUP 2: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE CITIES
Meeting the carbon reduction commitments of the Kyoto Protocol alone will make significant demands on our energy systems. These will particularly impact on urban areas both because of the majority of the population living in such areas and the high energy demands associated with living in towns and cities. There is now a concerted effort to increase the use of renewable energy sources and to shift from centralized to decentralized energy generation and distribution. This could have major impacts on how our cities are planned and operate. How is knowledge of new technologies shaping policy practice for sustainable cities? Dr Jo Williams will be one of the guest speakers talking about the “zero carbon homes” project.
