Project phases 1-3
Phase 1: The problems in Britain – what are the barriers to delivering zero carbon homes by 2016?
This part of the project drew on various studies completed in the UK that determined the likely problems (technological, economic, behavioural and institutional) that would face those constructing and those living in zero-carbon homes.
Four studies were completed:
- Survey of UK developers
- GMV case study
- Survey of energy service providers
- Survey of planners
An overview of results is given Phase 1 key results.
Phase 2: Solutions from Europe to encourage market transformation.
This part of the project studies the impact of various instruments and process innovations on the delivery of zero-carbon homes. These include economic, legislative, organisational and educational instruments and process innovations adopted in European countries which have transformed markets for low energy, carbon neutral, energy-plus, zero-carbon homes and passivhaus. This part of the project also seeks to identify the supportive structures needed in order for these instruments / processes to operate effectively.
Phase 3: Transference to Britain
This part of the project will involve discussion of the solutions identified by phase 2 of the research with an expert panel. The expert panel will be asked to consider the feasibility and relevance of adopting these approaches in Britain. How do the expert panel expect these solutions will transform the market for zero carbon homes and their delivery in Britain will be key questions asked? The expert panel will be made up of developers, energy service providers, experts in green building, campaigning groups, governmental bodies, built environment professionals, financial institutions and property agents.
